Young Fives is a bridge from preschool to Kindergarten. This bonus year allows children more time to develop socially, emotionally, and academically. The Young Fives grow and learn in a safe, nuturing environment through play, exploration, and discovery while still being academically challenged.
Curriculum
Religion
Students continue to learn about their faith and gain a greater apprecitaion for God’s creation. We work on our prayers, read and discuss Bible stories, and follow the Liturgical calendar. Students also attend Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
English & Language Arts
Young Fives use the Zoophonics curriculum to learn the alphabet, letters sounds, and establish a strong foundation for literacy. We focus on learning sight words, journal writing using inventive spelling, and other pre-reading skills.
Mathematics
Students use manipulatives, trial and error, and problem solving skills to explore math concepts such as counting, 1:1 correspondence, sorting, patterns, measurement, and addition/subtraction.
Science
Young Fives use a hands-on approach to explore, observe, and discover the world around them. We focus on making predictions, testing those predictions, observation skills, and learning about living/non-living things.
Social Studies
Students continue to develop social skills, learn how to interact with peers, practice problem solving and conflict resolution skills, and follow the rules/routines of being in school. We also learn about our community.
